NOTE FROM JOEL SCARBOROUGH:

In the late 1960s, I had the pleasure of working with Ray Hines of Ocean Springs, Mississippi in a tech writing venture.  During that time, we were part of a hand picked team researching and developing the addition of computer circuits to the electronics training branch at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi.  I grew to respect Ray Hines as one of the more brilliant physical science minds I have ever had the pleasure of working with.  A decade later, after Ray's death, I enjoyed working with his son, Randy, and discovered a bright young man who was intellectually qualified to walk in his father's footsteps.  Randy, however, was also blessed with the creative genes of his other parent, Regina Hines, acclaimed journalist, historian and author on the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

No wonder Randy's life path has been as diverse as it has been exciting.  Now, besides other interests, Randy likes to think of himself as a "Story Teller" (see the column at right) and a lover of music. Join him on this page for an occasional new music CD review

A RANDY TALE

Little Boys and fried chickens can fly.

by Randy Hines ©2003

Little boys and fried chickens can fly! It's all true!
It happened right here on the Mississippi Gulf Coast not very long ago. Okay, it was a little while back.
Maybe you remember reading it about it. After four solid days of rain Jimmy Wilkins had driven his Mom to the point of total frustration with all the sighing and whining and repetitions of "Mom, I'm bored!" Now it was Saturday afternoon and the whining was unbearable. It takes an eleven year-old to reach that proper nasal whine, having had about ten good years of practice. It was October of 1987; the same year they tore down the old gas station at the corner of Hwy 90 and Ladnier Road. You remember, there used to be just the two pumps and the fruit stand there, and they ended up building one of those gleaming monstrosities with the arc lights and the plastic signs in the windows. Now there are twenty- four pumps and you can get a half gallon fountain Coke. All that rain was pretty usual for October, though, when our summer thunderstorms are over and the subtropical heat finally gives way to an undecided cold front that lingers on the Coast like it's too exhausted to push out into the Gulf and release the cool, blue sky behind it. The six inches of rain had sent the construction crews home to catch up on the Soaps all week and it was still too wet to work. If they could get in a good couple of weeks work in a row, they could start building the next one over in Mobile.
After hearing the official "declaration of boredom" (more)
